The Netherlands will carry out border controls from December 9, 2024
The Netherlands will be carrying out border controls for all road traffic coming from Germany and Belgium. All international trains entering the Netherlands can also be checked. Border checks will not be carried out at every border crossing. The border controls will initially be introduced for a period of 6 months until June 8, 2025. The aim is to limit the influx of illegal foreigners into the Netherlands.
Border controls can also be carried out at airports in the Netherlands. These checks will only be carried out on specific flights. Namely those flights for which the Dutch authorities believe there is a risk of irregular migration or cross-border crime.
The Royal Military Police (KMAR) carries out these border controls on behalf of the Secretary of State of Asylum and Migration.
The temporary border controls are based on Article 25 of the Schengen Borders Code (Regulation (EU) 2016/399). This stipulates that temporary border controls can be reintroduced if this is necessary to maintain public order or national security. The Dutch government believes that this is the case.
